I’m excited to be writing about books for middle schoolers on this site! I will probably use this blog to write about things relating to middle school literacy that aren’t book reviews–strategies and activities I am using with our current class novel, for example, or why I have my students fill out reading logs and create book projects. I also might post about books I’m planning on reviewing, and books my students are obsessed with that I didn’t really expect (I have kids begging for the next Ms. Marvel trade paperback, which I guess I should have seen coming but didn’t).
In each of my review posts, I include the book’s AR information (if there is any). At the top of each review, I rate the book on a scale of 1 to 10, and give a short list of pros and cons. If you just want a quick idea of the book’s strengths and weaknesses and an overall rating, that’s where to look.
I’m always happy to have ideas of what to write about and suggestions for books to review. I haven’t been teaching 6th grade ELA for very long, and I stopped reading middle grade and YA in like, the late ’90s, so books that have been out for a while are totally fair game. I also plan to re-read books I loved in late elementary and middle school, so I can evaluate them from an educator’s perspective and be able to say more than “I loved that book 20 years ago!”
